BSG 4x05 "The Ties That Bind" -- Review

"Cylons do it how???..."

Cally (Henderson) Tyrol:  2004-2008

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I can't say I didn't see it coming (the moon lamp was especially portentious once you think about it).

It's kind of amusing in a way, because I've also been watching BSG with two of my married friends, albeit many episodes behind, and I wholeheartedly recommended skipping "A Day In The Life." Ooops.

So Cally found out. And then she almost went all Susan Smith. And then she got rocked by Tory (a most interesting development of its own), and got airlocked. Again. I honestly thought TBTB were going to back down for a second, after Tory took Nicky. Guess I should have known better. Just ask Lt. Doakes what happens when you find out something you really, really shouldn't know.

(Note that in my last post I watched the movie SUNSHINE -- in that film, there was a rather graphic spacing of a character, very similar to tonight.)

The immediate question is: Is Cally the Final Cylon? Highly unlikely. This is logically the end of her character's story, and a better jumping off point for Chief. It gives him something to do/ play off of for the rest of the season.

"But she was weirded out since the nebula..." Nope, she was a wife who realized something had drastically changed with her husband, and didn't know how to cope.

Beside, she's too minor of a character to be the Final Cylon, especially after the reveal of the Dylan Four. It's gotta be someone huge (my money's on a certain Vice President), and she's not a big enough character. And plus, since it is the final season, one must expect the wholesale permanent slaughter of many cast members -- I'm looking at you, Madame President)

So, good luck Nicki, and we'll see you on many other Canadian TV  /  Canada-filmed shows real soon)

In other developments, shut up Lee. No, just shut up. You're quickly becoming the John Locke of BSG; so desperate for any father figure's approval that you'll blindly follow their blatant manipulations in pursuit of your "own" path.

• That's quite the crew on the garbage scow (and only 2 vipers to defend it too). Hope they can get back to the fleet fast enough when they find Earth.

• You would think by now the 6s would know not to trust the Cavils. I can't wait until crazy DeAnna gets unboxed, it's going to be a shitstorm of epic proportions.

• I predict another change of heart for Boomer. Talk about someone whose been jerked around nonstop.

• I liked how Adama took the initiative to mend some fences with Roslin with the story. Was that the book she lent him in Season 1?

• Zarek is right tho. Roslin has indeed become a ruthless politican.

•  As a closing thought, I simply must steal a quote I read on the TWOP boards this morning that had me rolling:
"And by the way, the scene with Kara and Anders made me feel icky. Just get it through your head, Sam - Destiny is her boyfriend now. " - Van de Biezenbo, TWOP

So what would you have done to make it ****/****? Cut everything with Lee?

I was rethinking the episode all day on Fri and will probably bump it up to 3 1/2.

I tend to find alot with BSG that there's typically one element about an episode (in this case, the Cally storyline) that pushes it over the top, but that the rest often seems like filler.

In retrospect, I'm also bumping "He That Believeth..." up to 3 1/2.

What did YOU think?

WoW.
Let's take a look at the plot points covered:
  • Boomer hooking up with Cavil.  When we saw her last season, she had been listening to Cavil and was starting to think she was right.  Obviously this has gone farther.  I wonder if she knows the twist and the swirl?
  • Tory and [insert character's name here].  SMF Tigh was right.  She's turned into a major NymphoBot.  She frakked Anders, Baltar, and if she'd had her way, The Chief too (or had she? the ep wasn't clear about if things had progressed that far with Galen).  She already had some rather questionable morals (she's no Boyscout Billy), but she's really gone off the deep end into psycholand.
  • Kara sure has a shitload of people with her, I would have thought they'd have a smaller crew.  OK, Helo's there because they're old buds, they trust eachother and Athena's there because Helo's there.  Anders is there because Kara's there and he loves her for some strange reason (I wonder if that's the only reason).  Why are Gaeta and Seelix there?  OK, Seelix is a rookie pilot, she she's more expendable I guess.  Gaeta?  Well, he's probably smarter than all of them, yet Kara doesn't utilize his knowledge.  Maybe he has a need to follow leaders with delusions of messiahood.  Maybe he and Anders had a fling and he's following like a sick puppy.  I would bet they have more than 2 Vipers.
  • Kara is really losing it.  Hopefully she just needed to get some good Cylon Frakking.
  • Roslin's a president who believes herself on a mission from a higher power and has gotten quite used to ruling unchallenged by fiat while consolidating power into her.  To her, the legislature exists to rubberstamp her agenda.  Any subjects she doesn't desire to deal with or explain to others are simply labeled as "classified".  Good thing that'll NEVER happen in real life....
  • One question NEVER answered is, "Just how much of what Zarek says does he actually believe?"
  • Cylon civil war.  The Sixes and the Eights didn't anticipate this because they aren't the tacticians of the group.  They don't look at the future consequences of freeing the Centurions.  They don't consider the possibility that they were being set up.  In Myers Biggs terms, they are Feelers, not Thinkers.  Remember that Boomer, too, is the same as the other Eights personality-wise, thus you see her getting emotional during the attack.
  • It's unclear who survived the attack.  At this point, until proven otherwise, I am going to assume some of the Sixes and Eights lived.
  • You also have to wonder, did the Hybrids tacitly approve this war by allowing Basestars to fire on one another?  It has been established that The Hybrid can take action in response to desisions they don't approve.  Or did the Cavils remove them from the decision making process as well.
  • R.I.P. Cally.

So, is Caprica Six going to feel a disturbance in The Force?
